Black Sesame was the exhibition space of Institute for Provocation. It was housed in a converted boiler room of the courtyard at Heizhima hutong.
The transformation of the space from disused boiler room was done with a very tight budget and focused on cleaning up and repairing the space while adding necessary infrastructure. The main new features of the space is the large entrance door in metal, wood and glass, new windows on the south facade and flexible lighting in the ceiling suspended with a pulley system. The existing floor tiles were kept, only completed with similar-colour new ones. The concrete was exposed ceiling after removing the plaster coating. The lighting frame system has both fluorescent light and tracks for spotlights which enables a variation of exhibition setups.
