MUQARNAS
Product design
2025 -
Studio Max Gerthel was invited for the cross-innovation project What Matter_s organised by Form/Design Center and Region Skåne Utveckling. Working with Betong Design, a local workshop producing bespoke concrete washbasins and worktops, I developed a single washbasin for use on a vanity unit or solid wood wall fixture. The washbasin will be made using low-carbon concrete and has been designed to reduce material usage both for the mould and the cast. The facet pattern comes from a study of muqarnas, the vaults that adorn islamic mosques and which is built from the same geometric tesselating system used in mosaic ornamentations.
A prototype is presented at Form/Design Center in Malmö in 2025/2026 in the exhibition What Matter_s 3.0. The project is looking for a partner for further development of the design and casting technique.
